Born and raised in Fredericton, I fell in love with the art and science of psychology during my Bachelor of Science degree at the University of New Brunswick.

Like many Maritimers before me, making the decision to continue my studies brought me west where I completed my Master's Degree and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Manitoba. I missed the East Coast though.

What thankfully brought me back home to the Maritimes was my Doctoral Residency at the QEII Health Sciences Centre. During this residency, I grew enamoured with Halifax and being back home, which led me to stay in the city and start working in a private practice psychology clinic in Halifax.

Currently I am a Clinical Psychologist with The Nova Scotia Board of Examiners in Psychology and a member of The Association of Psychologists of Nova Scotia.

A good way to get to know a little about me is to read about How I do Therapy. With that the professional side of me is detailed, but here are some key points that I follow to guide my work:

  • It's all about you.
I let my clients guide the direction they go in. I'll make sure I know you and your values well before I help you develop the skills you need to move in the direction you want. I'll give you a nudge when you get stuck, but I believe that people inherently know what is best for them and will tell me what they want or need from their therapeutic experience when given the space. I frequently check in with the people I work with in order to ensure that: we're going in the right direction, they are feeling comfortable with the speed and type of therapy, and the skills/strategies we are developing are helpful. I ask the people I work with to let me know when they feel comfortable with ending therapy and prepare them to continue the work on their own after they are done with me.

  • Although there are very serious, emotionally laden moments in therapy which I can help guide you thorough, there are also lighter moments.
As we embark on exploring your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours I will usually try to find some lighter moments to crack a joke or help you feel comfortable sharing about your life.

  • I place the upmost importance in my values of confidentiality, respect, and autonomy.
Trusting your therapist is so important. No matter what I do professionally, I will keep in mind the importance of our therapeutic relationship.

  • I like to stay current on psychology research to ensure that you are getting the best care.
This includes both the literature on tried-and-true evidenced based therapies and the cutting-edge developments in psychological therapy.

  • I practice what I preach.
Much to their chagrin, friends have gotten used to me asking to stop during hikes or adventures to be mindful of a moment or scenery. I've practiced mindfulness extensively and know what works for me. I like being a well-rounded therapist. In order to stay healthy (in mind, body, and spirit) and manage stress, I enjoy running, bicycling, swimming, and listening to live music. So, when the discussion of creating a well-rounded lifestyle comes up, know that I work on making space for it myself.

  • I am human.
Although I am both careful and professional, all humans make missteps, and have some flaws. I strongly believe that being humble, open, and genuine helps professional health-care providers and the people they work with move past anything which comes up.
