treatment for anxiety in halifax

Ever wish you could channel the energy you spend on worrying towards other things?
Are there things you strongly fear?
Do you avoid certain activities or situations because of your fear?
Are you always keyed up, tense, or paying attention to your surroundings?
I have considerable experience working with people who have anxiety related to a whole range of issues. Whether it be a fear of judgement and social situations (Social Anxiety), a fear of losing control and having panic attacks (Panic Disorder), a fear of leaving your house or other situations where escape is difficult (Agoraphobia), specific fears and phobias (e.g. fears of the hospital, flying, heights, animals etc.) or worries about anything and everything (Generalized Anxiety). I can teach you the tools which can help you.
The first step to treating anxiety is learning new ways to relax which you may draw upon during anxious times. We can work through numerous different skills including breathing, relaxation, autogenic training, and mindfulness in order to find the one which can help you in moments of high anxiety. With practice, these skills can be at your finger tips to help address the anxiety in the moment.
With these new tools in hand, the next step is to find out which situations you are avoiding because of your anxiety and rate them according to your level of fear. We will then try the lowest feared situations and work our way to the highest situations. We can first imagine them in session and apply relaxation techniques, then you can try them for homework and let me know how they went.
Another step is looking at thoughts which get in the way of feared situations. We can look at difficult cognitions and learn to either change or diffuse them using many different techniques.
The final step is looking at your life holistically and understanding what makes you more vulnerable to being more anxious. Maybe I can help you become motivated to change your sleep, eating, exercise, or stress management routines. Or maybe I can help you become more assertive in saying no to people who make unfair demands.
All of the methods mentioned above are evidence based and are applied holistically, meaning, I will get to know you first before we try any of these in order to understand your unique challenges and strengths.
